January Winter Weather Updates

3 PM | Thursday, January 23 Update

Due to current road conditions, Lakewood Camping Resort offices will open on a delayed schedule at 12 noon on Friday, January 24. While ice and snow have started to melt, tonight’s frigid temperatures are expected to cause refreezing, creating potential driving hazards.

Our employees live all across the area, and we want them to commute only when it is safe to do so. As a result, we anticipate operating with a reduced staff tomorrow and appreciate your patience during this time.

If you need to travel, please drive with caution and refer to the SCDOT for updates on current road conditions.

Looking ahead, warmer temperatures are on the way! By the weekend, conditions are expected to improve significantly, and Tuesday’s forecasted high is a sunny 60 degrees—a welcome change from this week’s chilly weather!

Due to icy road conditions and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our employees, Lakewood Camping Resort will be closed today. Reopening will be scheduled for 10 am Thursday, but conditions may dictate changes.

2 PM, TUESDAY, JANUARY 21: Winter Storm Warning: What You Need to Know at Lakewood Camping Resort

As a rare winter storm makes its way to the Grand Strand, we want to ensure our guests and team members are prepared and informed. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for our area from Tuesday at 9 p.m. to Wednesday at 8 a.m.,(apparently snowfall will begin around 5:30pm) bringing snow flurries and colder temperatures. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe and make the most of this unique weather event! (weather channel says could be up to 7inches)

What to Expect:

• Snow Timing: Flurries are expected to peak between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday, with skies clearing by Wednesday morning.
• No Freezing Rain: Thankfully, freezing rain is not in the forecast, so power outages are unlikely.
• Stay Alert: The snow event will end for the Grand Strand by 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Operational Changes at Lakewood:

For the safety of our team and guests, we’ve adjusted our schedule:

Today’s Closing: Lakewood will close early at 6 p.m.

Tomorrow’s Opening: We’ll have a delayed opening at 10 a.m. (This may change, so stay tuned for updates.)

Our team has also spread Ice-Melt in common areas to prevent slipping hazards, but we urge everyone to drive and walk with caution.

How Guests Can Prepare:

Whether you’re staying in a campsite, annual site, or vacation rental, here are some tips to protect your setup from the cold:

Campsite Guests

• Running Faucets: Our Maintenance team has left some campsite faucets running at a trickle to prevent freezing—please do not turn these off.
• Water Lines: Fill your storage tanks, unhook and drain water hoses overnight, and bring them inside. Reconnect hoses during the day but unhook them again overnight if temperatures drop below freezing.

Annual Guests

• Leave a small trickle of water running overnight or insulate your outdoor pipes with pipe wrap to prevent freezing.

Vacation Rentals

• Our staff will manage water flow overnight to protect plumbing. If you notice any water issues, contact the Vacation Rentals office immediately.

7 AM, MONDAY, JANUARY 20: A Winter Weather advisory is in effect for our area. Bitterly cold temperatures, dangerously low wind chills, and potential snow are expected through Thursday.

• Arctic Air: Cold temperatures will move in Sunday night and stick around through Thursday.
• Subfreezing Temps: Daytime highs may not rise above freezing on Tuesday and Wednesday, potentially resulting in over 48 consecutive hours below freezing.
• Wind Chills: Gusty winds will send wind chills into the single digits early next week.
• Snow Chances: Snowfall could begin Tuesday afternoon and become widespread overnight, tapering off early Wednesday morning. The storm’s track will determine if we see snow, freezing rain, or sleet.

• Sunday Night: Arctic air begins to settle in.
• Tuesday Morning: Clouds increase.
• Tuesday Afternoon/Evening: Snowfall begins and becomes widespread overnight.
• Wednesday Morning: Snow ends, but wind chills will range from 5–10°F, with highs only reaching the upper 20s to low 30s.

Campsite Guests

• Our Maintenance team has left some campsite faucets running at a trickle to prevent freezing—please do not turn these off.
• Fill your storage tanks, unhook and drain water hoses overnight, and bring them inside if possible.
• Reconnect hoses during the day, but unhook them again if nighttime temperatures drop below freezing.
• Wind gusts expected please secure loose site decorations or awnings

• Leave a small trickle of water running overnight or wrap your outdoor lines with pipe insulation.
• If you’re not onsite, call the front office before 5 PM  to request a water shutoff. Emergency requests can be directed to security after hours.

• If you encounter any water issues, notify the Vacation Rentals office immediately.
